West Lake Tahoe

The West Shore is the stretch of Lake Tahoe from Tahoe City to Emerald Bay. Fishing, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, boating, rock climbing, four wheeling, mountain biking -- you name it -- it is here on the West Shore.

The original Tahoe Tavern featured amenities such as a barbershop, bowling alley, ballroom, theater, pleasure pier, laundry stables, golf links, swimming pool, and an indoor skating rink. The Tavern was visited by many of Hollywood’s favorites. The Steamer Tahoe would meet the Truckee train out on the Tavern's 1/8 mile long pier. The Tavern was sold to developers in 1960 and was demolished in or around 1964. It is now a large higher end condominium complex in Tahoe City on the west shore offering lakefront and lakeview units.

Comstock Acres is a newer subdivision that is tucked away and backs to the secluded Paige Meadows. In the winter, it is a wonderful meadow to enjoy a moonlit ski tour.

Granlibakken resort is the West Shore’s largest year-round resort. Although primarily a conference center, there are several privately owned condos here as well. Granlibakken is home to a local's favorite sled hill and small ski hill. The resort also offers tennis courts and a swimming pool.

Sunnyside is the most commercial of the west shore communities. There are two markets, a campground and beach, bike shop, boat rentals, two restaurants, and the very popular Sunnyside Resort and Marina.

Pineland lies at the entrance to Ward Creek State Park. This subdivision, located along the creek, is very wooded and shady. There are several homes here that were built by Burt Anderson, who built homes in the 60's and set the standard for the Old Tahoe cabin. This area backs up to Alpine Peaks and Alpine Ski Resort, were one can catch the Sherwood lift to access the ski area.

Timberland feels very shaded and heavily wooded. This is a wonderful older neighborhood, and several Burt Anderson homes were also built here.

Hurricane Bay offers wonderful lakefront homes with a lovely white, sandy beach. The water is quite deep here and great for boating. Some say this is the best location for a pier on the lake.

Tahoe Pines is the area just below Eagle Rocks Bluff originally called Idlewild. In 1880, this area was considered the heart of high society West Shore living. The renowned "summer whirl" took place here. This historic area officially became Tahoe Pines in 1912.

Located approximately six miles south of Tahoe City is Fleur de Lac, a gated community with elegant town homes. The community features all the amenities anyone could possibly ever want. Built on the old Henry J. Kaiser estate, scenes for The Godfather Part II were filmed here. If you enjoy lakefront living, this 15-acre waterfront community has it all, including a beach.

Homewood, surrounded by dazzling blue water and majestic mountains, was once a popular resort and the first stop of the S.S. Tahoe. It was especially popular for its beach, open-air dancing, boating and campfire activities. Although the resort is gone now, Homewood is still a favorite spot on the West Shore. Homewood offers resort skiing, boating activities, two marinas, restaurants, the historic Obexer’s Market, a variety of lodging choices, as well as a popular venue for the July 5th Independence Day Fireworks.

The beach at Chambers Landing fills with sun bathers and swimmers alike. The private lakefront condos’ amenities include a pool, tennis courts, and lovely beach. Condos and single-family homes are also available across the street in the Chamberlands subdivision.

McKinney Estates is located just south of Chambers Landing where you will find the turnoff to one of the most demanding 4X4 trails in America, The Rubicon Trail. It is the site of the annual Jeeper's Jamboree at Miller Lake and backs to the Desolation Wilderness. To access the trails one must first wander through the McKinney Estates neighborhood. This is a comparatively new subdivision is tucked in alongside McKinney Creek.

Meeks Bay
Emerald waters here mark the territory with beautiful lakefront and lakeview homes. Meeks Bay Campground, once run by the Washoe Tribe, is located here and is quite popular with larger groups. There are limited concessions available in this area.

Rubicon
One of the most beautiful bays on the West Shore, Rubicon is a highly desirable community of luxury lakefront and lakeview homes. Backing this area is Rubicon Peak, a popular spot for local back country skiers and snowboarders alike.
